Man sentenced to 18 years in prison for attempting to set fire to a mosque in the Moscow region

The Second Western District Military Court has handed down a verdict against 19-year-old Moscow region resident Korneliy Kurbatov. He was found guilty on charges of terrorist activity, participation in the activities of a terrorist organization, and training for terrorist activities.

According to court and investigation records, in December 2024, Kurbatov and his 17-year-old acquaintance attempted to set fire to a mosque building in the city of Serpukhov. The building did not sustain serious damage as a result of the incident, with only burn marks left on the walls. During an investigation conducted by law enforcement officers, instructions for preparing flammable liquid and planning the crime were found on Kurbatov's phone.

By the court's decision, Kurbatov was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He is to serve his sentence in a maximum-security penal colony. He pleaded guilty. Compulsory medical treatment measures were ordered for his underage accomplice.
