The Yelabuga City Court has announced its verdict against farm head Elena Sobina and Vladimir Chayka, General Director of Mir LLC. They were found guilty in connection with a fire that broke out in December 2023 at a workers' dormitory in the village of Malorechenskoye.
According to the court's decision, Elena Sobina was sentenced to 4 years of suspended imprisonment (with a 3-year probation period). Vladimir Chayka was sentenced to 3 years of forced labor, with 10% of his salary to be withheld for the state. The defendants were charged under the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for providing services that did not meet safety requirements and for violating fire safety regulations.
The tragedy occurred in a building housing employees of the Mir company farm. The fire, which covered an area of 300 square meters, resulted in the deaths of 6 people, including 5 citizens of Uzbekistan and one resident of Udmurtia. At the time, there were 39 workers in the building, 33 of whom were rescued.
According to the investigation, the building lacked fire safety systems, specifically automatic alarms and evacuation equipment. It was also determined that the necessary safety conditions for employees were not provided and fire safety regulations had been violated.
