Serious changes are taking place at the "styrene chain" construction site, a major investment project being implemented at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNH) plant in the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk. The process of terminating the contract with the project's general contractor, Yamata, has begun. The primary reasons cited are financial issues among the staff and a mass exodus of the workforce.
According to sources, there have been delays in salary payments among the more than 3,000 workers involved in the project. Specifically, about a thousand builders from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have left the site. Furthermore, workers from India held protests due to unpaid wages. This situation has caused construction work to fall behind schedule.
This situation at the industrial site has affected not only the workers but also the subcontractors involved in the project. A number of local contractors have filed lawsuits, stating that they have not received payment for services and rental fees from Yamata. SIBUR representatives, meanwhile, emphasize that all financial obligations to the contractor have been met.
The construction project is scheduled for completion in 2028, and the facility is currently 65 percent complete. SIBUR management has begun searching for a new contractor to ensure the project deadlines are not missed. At present, the financial status of Yamata and the issue of debts to subcontractors are being reviewed within the framework of bank guarantees.
