Latvia may suspend visa issuance for Uzbekistan citizens

The Latvian Ministry of the Interior has proposed a temporary suspension of the visa issuance process for citizens of Uzbekistan. The ministry explains this measure by citing crimes committed by certain Uzbek citizens who arrived in the country, including crimes against minors.

Minister of the Interior Janis Dombrava put forward this proposal during a government meeting held on September 29. The ministry emphasized that during the suspension period, cooperation with the Uzbek side will be established, and measures will be considered to prevent the entry of individuals who may pose a threat to public order and security.

However, at the meeting on September 29, coalition partners did not support including this issue on the government's agenda. Nevertheless, the Latvian Ministry of the Interior hopes that this initiative will be reconsidered at one of the upcoming government meetings.

At the same time, on September 22, the Latvian government approved a comprehensive plan to restrict migration. According to the new Immigration Law, which came into force on September 15, security requirements for issuing visas and residence permits have been tightened, and pre-entry control measures have been expanded.
