How can parents with a child who is a Russian citizen obtain citizenship?

According to Russian legislation, foreign parents have the right to obtain Russian citizenship based on their children who are Russian citizens. An important aspect is that this opportunity remains valid even if the child has reached the age of 18.

For parents of adult children, the following conditions are required for processing citizenship: the child must hold Russian citizenship, the parent must have a valid residence permit (VNJ), and it is recommended to have permanent registration in Russia. If the child is a minor, the procedure differs slightly, and grounds may include circumstances such as the death of the other parent who was a Russian citizen, their disappearance, or the deprivation of parental rights.

The process of obtaining citizenship consists of several stages: first, registering for migration purposes, obtaining a residence permit (VNJ) directly without needing a temporary residence permit (RVP), obtaining permanent registration, and submitting documents for citizenship. After submitting the documents, it takes up to three months for a decision to be made.

Once a positive decision is reached, the individual takes an oath and can apply for a Russian passport. Before submitting documents, it is recommended to contact the regional divisions of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs to verify the exact list of required documents.
