Obtaining a residence permit (VNJ) in Russia allows foreign citizens to solidify their long-term status in the country and enjoy expanded rights. This document serves as a basis for stable employment, access to public services, and future citizenship application.
To obtain a VNJ, it is generally required to have lived in the country for at least one year on the basis of a temporary residence permit (RVP). However, a simplified procedure exists for certain categories of individuals, including those married to Russian citizens, highly qualified specialists, or participants in state programs. To submit an application, one needs a passport, proof of income, proof of residence, medical insurance, a language proficiency certificate, and a receipt for the state duty payment.
The application is submitted to the divisions of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, where the documents undergo a comprehensive review. The standard processing time is 4 months, while the simplified procedure takes 2 months. If a positive decision is made, the VNJ is issued for a period of 5 years with the possibility of unlimited renewals.
Formal employment is a crucial factor in the VNJ application process. A formal source of income and tax payments confirm the reliability of the documents and reduce the risk of rejection. Furthermore, notification of the migration authorities by the employer guarantees the legality of labor activities.
Individuals who have obtained a VNJ are required to confirm their residence annually, must not stay outside of Russia for more than 6 consecutive months, and must comply with migration and labor laws. Violation of these rules may lead to the revocation of the status.
