Temporary residence permit for students in Russia: benefits and deadlines

Ahead of the new academic year, the Migration Department of the Russian Interior Ministry for the Khabarovsk Territory has released important information for international students enrolled in full-time programs at state universities. According to the guidelines, students are eligible to obtain a temporary residence permit for education purposes (RVPO) for the duration of their studies.

Obtaining an RVPO offers several advantages to students. Specifically, citizens of countries with a visa regime are no longer required to apply for annual visas and invitations when entering or leaving Russia. This helps to avoid unnecessary time and financial costs associated with document processing.

Furthermore, students and postgraduates holding this permit can legally remain in Russia for 6 months after completing their studies. During this time, they have the opportunity to apply for a permanent residence permit (VNJ) or, in the case of doctoral students, complete their dissertation defense without having to leave the country.

Experts note that foreign graduates retain the right to apply for a permanent residence permit in Russia for up to 3 years after graduation. Students wishing to take advantage of these benefits are advised to contact the migration offices in the region where they are studying.
