According to Russian migration legislation, foreigners temporarily staying in the country have the right to extend their stay through their close relatives. This opportunity applies to two main categories of individuals.
The first category includes close relatives of Russian citizens or persons holding a residence permit (VNJ). This includes spouses, children, parents, grandparents, and grandchildren. It is required that the relative who is a citizen of a visa-free country has a permanent registration in Russia (a stamp in their passport or residence permit). The period is extended for 1 year from the date of entry, and this can be done multiple times. Importantly, relatives do not have to live at the same address or in the same region.
The second category includes family members of individuals working as citizens of Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan). This list includes only spouses, children, and parents (grandparents and grandchildren are not included). The extension period depends on the validity of the relative's employment contract. If the contract is indefinite, the permit is granted for up to 1 year.
These rules allow migrants to be with their family members. In each case, when processing documents, it is required to adhere to the established deadlines and apply to the relevant migration authorities in a timely manner.
