A temporary residence permit (RVP) in Russia is issued for a period of 3 years, and it cannot be extended. Once the specified period expires, the document's validity automatically ceases, so it is important to monitor the expiration date.
RVP holders are required to comply with a number of legal obligations. Specifically, they must annually submit a notification confirming their place of residence and income, not stay outside the Russian Federation for more than 180 days within a year, and transfer the RVP stamp to a new passport if the passport is replaced. Violation of these rules may lead to the revocation of the RVP.
Furthermore, RVP holders have the opportunity to obtain a residence permit (VNJ), which grants the right to permanent residence. Documents for VNJ can be submitted 8 months after receiving the RVP or 4–6 months before the 3-year RVP period expires.
