Vladimir Mukomel, head of the Center for the Study of Interethnic Relations at the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has sharply criticized the idea of banning labor migrants from bringing their families into the country. According to the renowned sociologist, such restrictions could lead to serious social and economic problems for Russia itself in the long term.
As a reminder, a new bill was submitted to the State Duma by deputies from the LDPR party. It proposes to ban the entry of family members of foreign migrants working in Russia under a patent or temporary work permit (unless they have other legal grounds).
Doctor of Sociology Vladimir Mukomel highlighted the negative aspects of this initiative. The expert noted that banning families from coming would deprive Russia of a new generation that is adapted to the local culture and society and is proficient in the Russian language. Migrants who arrive with their families integrate into Russian society faster and are more law-abiding. Banning them, on the contrary, could create fertile ground for the formation of closed ethnic groups and social tension.
Furthermore, the expert noted that Russia's migration policy has changed drastically following certain events in 2024, and legislation is becoming increasingly stringent. Experts emphasize that instead of radical bans, it would be more effective to strengthen mechanisms for integrating migrants into Russian society.
